Pet Grooming FAQ

What exactly is de-shedding?

“De-shedding” is a term coined here at Transformation Pet Center for the process of ridding the coat of excess dead hair. We clean and condition the coat to soften and loosen it, then blow it out with high-velocity dryers, rake it, brush it, and comb it — whatever it takes — while keeping stress to a minimum. Our motto: “The Hair Stays Here!”.

What is hand stripping, and does it hurt the dog?

Hand stripping is the traditional way to groom harsh-coated terriers: plucking the old, ready hairs so new coat grows in with proper color and texture. These coats have been bred for generations to be stripped; what comes out is dead hair that is ready to go. Most terriers tolerate it well. It simply takes more time and patience, which is why the service costs more — typically $45–$60 for a small terrier.

Do you groom cats?

Yes — cat grooming is embraced here. Grooming is loving, firm and quite swift (the best way to bathe a cat? FAST!). Owners are welcome to stay and assist if they think their cat would do better with them present.

When should my puppy have its first grooming?

Around 12–16 weeks old is ideal. Puppy sessions are gentle introductions: getting acquainted with the groomer and the procedures, with plenty of reassurance. A special puppy session lasts only an hour or two at most.

Can you handle dogs with special needs or “issues”?

Yes. Our salon uses stress-reducing equipment — Hydro-Surge bathing, an Artmaster clipper vacuum system and LIPS full-support grooming tables — and our low-volume operation lets us give dogs that need extra patience the time they deserve.

Do you sell pet food and grooming products?

We were the first outlet in Tucson to offer healthy pet foods and still carry a rotating selection such as Wysong, Natural Balance and Innova, plus groomer-approved tools, low-toxicity flea and tick control, and Cetacea collars and harnesses. Call first — our inventory is small and turns over monthly.

Can you teach me to groom my own pet (or improve my grooming skills)?

Private lessons are available for both pet owners and professionals. Topics include Better Bichons, More Style for Terriers, customizing mixed-breed styles, examining the Miniature Schnauzer and techniques of hand stripping. Lessons run $60–$100 per session.
